Riftwalker
Cinnamon BunRiftwalker is the status of a person who appears in Dirt from another world, usually alongside a new dungeon. The condition initially presents itself through dislocation and ignorance: the newcomer may understand local speech without learning it, yet lack the practical knowledge required to interpret magic, customs, places, and threats. In Broccoli Bunch’s case, the status turns apparent incompetence into evidence of a larger pattern. It makes her an outsider, but it also places her within a recurring phenomenon that the world’s inhabitants only understand through rumor.
Definition and Recognition
Riftwalkers are not simply travelers from a distant country. Gunther identifies Broccoli Bunch as someone who is “not from this world,” and explains that people like her receive the gift of communicating across languages when they arrive. He distinguishes this ability from the ordinary Skill called Tongues: that Skill can produce a similar result at expert rank, but it is advanced and difficult to acquire, whereas Riftwalkers apparently possess the linguistic gift immediately. Broccoli’s failure to react when Gunther shifts between languages exposes the difference. She has not mastered several tongues through study; her status makes the linguistic barriers transparent to her.
The status is recognized by inference rather than by a visible mark. Gunther notices the mismatch between Broccoli’s behavior and her surroundings, while Amaryllis reaches the same conclusion after hearing Broccoli ask what a Riftwalker is. Amaryllis understands that the label explains Broccoli’s “wildly incompetent” handling of magic, her ignorance of local cultures, and her general cluelessness. What first looks like a personal deficiency therefore becomes a structural condition: Broccoli is trying to function in a world whose basic systems were never taught to her.
Connection to Dungeons
Gunther’s account places Riftwalkers within the world’s dungeon cycle. He says there is one for nearly every new dungeon, though they are not always human or even people. Some arrivals are strange animals or other creatures, suggesting that the phenomenon extends beyond sapient travelers. Those capable of speech commonly describe being sent toward a difficult or impossible quest. The pattern is widespread but difficult to observe because new dungeons appear far apart, often in inhospitable locations, making meetings between Riftwalkers uncommon.
Broccoli’s own arrival follows this pattern. A new dungeon presents her with a direct summons: a message declares that a great evil has set its root in the world and asks whether she will accept the quest. The apparent game interface turns the Riftwalker’s arrival into a call to action, but the status itself does not guarantee heroic success. The system rewards her for small class-aligned actions such as Cleaning, grants experience for defeating three Sentinel Ghosts above her level, and later announces the discovery of the Evil Root while warning that she is too weak to destroy it. Her otherworldly origin gives her a route into the quest, not mastery over it.
Social Risk and Historical Precedent
Knowledge of the status is uneven and potentially dangerous. Gunther treats it as a matter of curiosity and rumor, saying that the world might bless a Riftwalker or might not. Amaryllis, by contrast, fears the consequences of having traveled with one without conducting a proper investigation. She says that professors at Farseeing Academy could punish her severely for failing to question Broccoli thoroughly. The same identity that fascinates Gunther threatens Amaryllis’s professional standing, showing that Riftwalker is not a neutral biographical detail but a socially charged category.
Amaryllis’s initial judgment of Broccoli changes once the status is disclosed. She had interpreted Broccoli’s ignorance as evidence that she had been struck in the head or was simply hopelessly incapable. Learning that Broccoli is a Riftwalker does not erase the failures, but it supplies a cause for them. The revelation also makes Amaryllis less disappointed that the two have become friends. Her response is shaped by precedent: the last Riftwalker she heard about appeared to be an unimpressive man of little talent, yet he eventually became a professor at Snowland’s greatest academy and pioneered the gravitic engine used by airships roughly a century later. The category therefore carries both stigma and promise. It can describe a bewildered novice and, in retrospect, a transformative inventor.
Broccoli’s Riftwalker Experience
Broccoli’s status changes the meaning of her early progress. The world repeatedly translates ordinary or comic behavior into formal advancement: cleaning a room unlocks Cleaning, repeated social effort unlocks Friendmaking, and an accidental hat mishap unlocks Cute. These rewards suggest that the system measures her adaptation through actions rather than through inherited competence. She learns by doing, often under pressure, and receives concrete confirmation that even small acts can establish a foothold in an unfamiliar reality.
Her outsider perspective also makes local cultural references unstable. She recognizes the poisoned cake and shrinking potion as an Alice in Wonderland reference, reads the banners and royal decree associated with the Queen of Hearts, and encounters the Zombie of Cheshire as a dungeon boss whose level exceeds the expected range. The familiar and the alien overlap without becoming identical. Broccoli can identify the source pattern, but she still has to survive its local, dangerous incarnation. Her Riftwalker status thus creates a double vision: Earth-derived recognition supplies limited orientation, while Dirt’s rules determine the actual consequences.
Narrative Significance
Riftwalker functions as both explanation and invitation. It explains why Broccoli can understand languages yet knows almost nothing about the societies around her, why her magical education is absent, and why Amaryllis initially misreads her behavior. At the same time, it expands the story beyond a single summoned protagonist. Gunther’s report establishes a dispersed population of arrivals, many of whom live ordinary lives, while the historical example of the gravitic-engine pioneer keeps open the possibility that an apparently marginal newcomer may reshape the world.
The status also complicates the heroic quest offered by the system. Broccoli is called upon to save the world, but she begins by doubting that the floating quest box can be real, struggles with low-level dangers, and remains too weak to destroy the Evil Root directly. Even so, the system records her choices as meaningful: she accepts the quest, cleans, fights, completes objectives, and forms friendships. Riftwalker is therefore less a guarantee of destiny than a condition of radical arrival. It places a person outside every local expectation, then makes adaptation itself the first measure of whether that person can become part of the world.
